Interviews: Mission possible

An intro guide to get you prepared for your (first) interview

First things first: How do you figure out what is next in your career and how to start

Are you at the beginning of your career or just simply looking to make a change, but having trouble figuring out what is next?

It’s important when beginning your job search you have a clear understanding of what you are searching for and how this next adventure will align with your goals and priorities.

The better understanding you have, the better you will be able to make an educated decision on what type of job you want or what type of career you want to make a switch in to.

Sit down and think hard about what you want - make a list of your goals and priorities, both professional and personal to find alignment between the two!

  1. PROFESSIONAL PRIORITIES: Inclusive and open company culture, transparency with management, mentorship, clearly outlined upward progression, work-life balance
  2. PROFESSIONAL GOALS: Step into management, take on more duties in your role, start your own company, get that promotion
  3. PERSONAL PRIORITIES: Travel, settling down, planning a wedding, saving for your children’s college
  4. PERSONAL GOALS: Buying a new car, purchasing a house, paying off student loans, locking down that vacation

Resumes: how to stand out in the crowd and make the cut line

Applying for a job?
Here is the content you should be focusing on to make your resume stand out in the crowd and draw a recruiter's or hiring manager's attention.

First thing you want to make sure your resume does is spark attention - a recruiter spends 5 - 7 seconds on your resume before making a decision if you made the cut for
the second round.

The next thing you want your resume to create is excitment so the recruiter wants to know more about you and calls you for your first round of interviews.

Our top 5 Content Resume Tactics Used to Tailor you C.V. to stand out in the crowd

One of the most important things is to read and relate to the Job description.
Find the points that seem important and the points that you can relate to with your experience and skills. Identify what the hiring manager is looking for in a perfect candidate and create that image for yourself.

Relevant experience

Start your resume with the most relevant experience for the role you are applying for. Remember: keep your resume short, no more than 2 pages.

First section

Fill up the first section with any experience or qualifications that will catch a hiring manager’s attention. If you don't have experience for the role, start with any qualification, certification or even freelance experience or volunteer experience that can prove you have the skills needed for performing the tasks for the role.

Soft skills

Highlight the soft skills mentioned in the job description. Create a different section for the soft skills and highlight it.

No previous experience?

Even if your previous experience might not be directly related to the role you’re interested in, you can definitely highlight skills that relate.

Run a spell check

Run a spell check, make sure there are no missing letters or worse, words. Most important: keep wording short. Don't create entire pharagraphs, even if it may seem appealing at first. Recruiters usually read in a Z pattern, so they will skip your narative. Be concise and to the point, makes the reading easier. Put down key words, as these will have a better impact.

Punctuation is important

Add punctuation when punctuation is needed. If you wrote that one of your soft skills is attention to details - then make sure you are paying attention to the small things in your resume, as these are the ones that usually pop up.

Dare to be bold

Dare to go for a bolder CV template that can highlights your skills, experiences, projects. Your resume should show your personality - so don't be afraid to add colours. Just keep the color pallete simple and not to bright or shiny to hurt the eye.

Modern template

Chose a modern resume that should be easy to read and attractively designed. Find ways to highlight the most important information to help guide those who are just skimming resumes, like add color, highlights, bold or italics, to draw the eye to the sections you want noticed first.

3 Pillars to Success

Never put your career or success into anyone else hands, if you need more pipeline or anything else, the best person to go get it is you. In tandem to being a team player, look at your position as your own business - write a business plan - outline the entire life cycle to fully understand the required activity and pipeline to fulfill your potential. Look at your business lifecycle as if you were a mechanic working on a car. If a car part is broken what does a mechanic do? A mechanic does not think he is broken - he simple fixes the part so the car runs smoothly.

When we are determined enough, creative enough, energetic enough, we can always find a solution and get any required resources. There is always a way to spend money and time on other resources claiming to provide a short cut to success, avoid this trap. There are a lot of great tools out there but they are not a cure-all. Nothing can replace the resourceful individual.

Don't settle on your priorities in life. Don't sell yourself short. Expect the best, and get it. Completing your work has nothing to do with the time spent - that's an antiquated approach. The job is done when it's completed. Hold yourself accountable. We don't always get what we want, but we do get what we tolerate. Being a sell out = selling yourself short.

Here are 3 additional helpful short pointers to keep in mind. We constantly remind ourselves of these points at SecureVision (via Tony Robbins).

  • The recipe = Massive Action backed by Massive Faith NEVER fails
  • Knowledge is potential power, execution of high standards is the key
  • Where focus goes, energy flows

INTERVIEWS SUCCESS GUIDE

This interviewing tip can significantly help you land your dream job

Prior to your in person interview ask your previous direct managers for LinkedIn recommendations. Then...

When you walk into the office for your in person and hand over your resume, have those LinkedIn recommendations sitting on top...

This is called, pre-framing. Arguable the most important sales technique.

Gain vantage point

Prior to even beginning the dialog you let the hiring manager know that people in a very similar role to their own see immense value in your skill set.

This allows you to begin the interview from a different vantage point.

Confirm you are a solid candidate from the start

Instead of climbing up hill like most people interviewing that are trying to prove themself, you have positioned yourself at the top of the mountain as an expert and can walk downhill...

They KNOW you are a solid candidate now, all you need to do is provide concise detail on the focus areas your interviewer needs to cover...
